Making Cities Slum Free

The greatest failure in slum rehabilitation thus far has not been the paltry success rate of various slum rehabilitation initiatives throughout the world, nor has it been the lack of Governmental support in terms of financial investment. Piecemeal slum schemes and charity have never been sustainable models for rehabilitation. The failure lies at a far more basic level of thinking that slums constitute only a housing problem as opposed to an economic problem as well. In this presentation Mr. Mehta will share his experiences and challenges in the redevelopment of Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest and most notorious slums located in Mumbai, India.

Mukesh Mehta has completed his Masters in Architecture from Pratt Institute, New York and is an entrepreneur by nature.

Mukesh has extensive experience in Poverty Alleviation as he has been working on rural development and slum rehabilitation projects including the prestigious Dharavi Redevelopment Project, one of Asia’s largest and most notorious slums. He is a regular speaker and panellist at international Seminars and conferences on housing for urban poor. He is a frequently published author of papers and articles on the same subject.

Apart from Dharavi, his organisation has been appointed as Advisor & Project Management Consultants for rehabilitation of approximately 500,000 families/businesses across India.
