"Room at The Top- Alternative Social Spaces in Singapore"

The presentation explores alternative social spaces in Singapore - a city state that has a post colonial heritage of living, working and playing in the tall building typology. It considers the physical eradication of the public realm in lieu of privatisation and the birth of semi public domains.  Historical reference to the 5 ft way and tropical veranda, through to the modern day concourse system, the sky court and sky garden will seek to demonstrate measures being taken to replenish the open space programme within the city in order to facilitate greater opportunities for social interaction and co-presence.

Jason Pomeroy is an award winning architect and director of International multi-disciplinary design practice, Broadway Malyan. He joined the London office in 2005 to support the cause of sustainable design and Vertical Urbanism design and employs these skills in both practice and the lecture theatre.

His research at Cambridge considered the notion of the tall building as a vertical city and the 'sky court' as an alternative civic space for the 21st century. He continues to pursue this vein of PhD research at the
Bartlett school of graduate studies, London, and is similarly writing a book of the same subject.

In addition to co-directing the Singapore office of Broadway Malyan, he lectures and publishes widely.
He sits on the editorial board of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and is a visiting faculty of Mapua Institute of Technology, University Technology Malaysia, University of Nottingham and University of Hawaii
