Ajit Gulabchand
Chairman, Lavasa city
“Decentralizing Cities: Lavasa City”

India has the second largest urban system in the world with 310 million living in 5161 cities and towns. Most Indian cities today are reeling under problems of infrastructure collapse because of increasing population, lack of planning and poor management. To make matters worse, in the next 30 years, another 400 million will migrate to these cities. Lavasa, a hill city planned on the concept of New Urbanism and with the principles of sustainable development offers a solution for the urban chaos in the country. Master planned by HOK, the city provides world class physical infrastructure, educational and health facilities. The First of the three phases of Lavasa will be completed and set to operational by the end of 2010.
