“Hybrid Solutions for Tall Buildings”
Recent innovations in the design of tall buildings have evolved away from single material solutions, to the optimum design often being a concrete / steel hybrid. Atkins has made extensive use of large span steel trusses to pair concrete core walls and engaging these to act as mega-frames. This has the advantage of enhancing lateral stability despite the presence of high gravity loads on the transfer structures, resulting in large column free volumes, whilst resolving complex geometries often associated with modern high-rise architecture. In our presentation we will showcase several projects emphasising how these structural system complement the architectural intent.

Biography

Farshad Berahman
Senior Structural Engineer, W.S. Atkins Middle East, Dubai

BSc (Hons.), MSc, PhD (Earthquake Engineering)

Farshad is a senior structural engineer and holds an MSc and a PhD in Earthquake and Structural Engineering and has 12 years experience. He has been involved in design, coordination and management of commercial, residential and industrial buildings projects. He joined Atkins Middle East in Dubai in 2005 and has since been involved in several prestigious high rise buildings such as Trump International Hotel and Tower, the Icon Hotel and Tiffany Tower all in Dubai.

Farshad has strong background in numerical analysis particularly in nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures, finite element methods and seismic design of structures. He has also been the peer reviewer for Dubai Pearl development in Dubai. He holds an unlimited engineering licence with Dubai Municipality and has authored several papers in the field of Earthquake Risk Management.

Matthew Esther
Associate Structural Engineer, W.S. Atkins Middle East, Dubai

BEng (Hons.) CEng EurIng MICE MIStructE MSFE

Matthew graduated from City University, London in 1996. He is a Chartered Civil & Structural Engineer with 13 years experience and was previously based in Greece and in the UK where he undertook technical and management roles in the design and construction of commercial, office, residential, retail and sports & leisure projects. Since joining Atkins Middle East in Dubai in 2007, he has been involved in a number of high-rise projects and has had a major involvement in the design of Trump Tower International Hotel and Tower, the Icon Hotel and was the Project Engineer for Anara Tower, a multi-purpose high-rise building.

Matthew’s area of expertise is in the design of tall buildings, long-span & geometrically complex structures and façade engineering. He has a particular interest in the conceptual design of architecturally led projects and in the design & fabrication of steel structures.
